DesignStudio rebrands to Further, a bet on human creativity
The agency behind Airbnb and Riot Games renamed itself Further, merged with two studios, and staked its future on the design work AI can't do.

DesignStudio changed its name. The London agency that redrew Airbnb's identity in 2014, then went on to brand Riot Games, the Premier League and EA Sports, now calls itself Further. The new name arrived in September 2025 with an argument attached, and the argument is about what AI does to design work.
The line the founders keep repeating comes from Paul Stafford: "Design will be commoditised. But creativity will endure." The bet is that AI will do more of the production, the resizing, the routine execution, and that the value moves to the moments a machine can't reach: the strategy, the idea, the call about what a brand should become. Further's own tagline says it plainly. A bet on the future, a belief in human creativity.

Three studios, one group
The rename is the visible part. Underneath it, Further is a group. DesignStudio merged with Analog, a motion design studio, and Pixel Artworks, an agency that builds immersive installations and live experiences. Analog and Pixel Artworks keep their names and run as specialist studios inside the group. DesignStudio took the Further name and leads the front. Waterland Private Equity backs the whole thing, with offices in London, New York and Dubai.
The logic is coverage. A client that needs a rebrand, a launch film, a physical activation and a website can get all four from one group instead of stitching together four vendors. It's a pitch aimed at marketing leaders who are tired of managing a roster.

Execution gets cheap, judgment gets sold
For anyone who makes digital products, the reasoning matters more than the mark. Further is restructuring around the idea that execution is getting cheap and judgment is the thing worth paying for. The work page leads with two words, "defining moments," and frames the job as the strategic calls that turn a brand into something people care about, up to and past an IPO.
That's a different sale than "we make beautiful things." It's closer to "we help you make the right decision at the point it matters most." If AI keeps eating the production layer, that's the ground a lot of design businesses will fight to hold.

The bet has a catch
Worth being straight about the risk. "Creativity endures" is a claim every agency will make in 2026, because it's the comforting version of the AI story. Private equity money wants the group to grow, and growth pressure and craft don't always pull the same way. Consolidation can sharpen an offer, or it can flatten three good studios into one blander one.
So treat the rename as a hypothesis. The test is whether the work coming out of Further over the next year looks braver than what a cheaper, faster, AI-assisted competitor can make. If Stafford's right that creativity is the moat, the proof has to show up on the page. For now, DesignStudio becoming Further is the clearest bet yet that a major agency thinks design's value is shifting toward judgment and away from execution.
